My last day in Germany!
After reading the guide book about Koln, Koblenz, Limburger, Bonn,
and the other cities in the area, I decided to return to the Oldenwald.
I investigated different routes in and out and drove further east
into the Maine River valley. There was more of the same type of
scenery and the area was more mountainous with very steep and winding
roads.
Regardless of the steepness of the roads and the narrowness of
the roads in the small towns, the German truckers still double-haul.
I followed one double rig unit up and down hills, around corners,
and through probably 15 towns since the roads weren’t wide or straight
enough to pass him.
Wherever the land is flat enough, the area is very agricultural.
Along the Maine River the steep eastern slope is terraced for miles
for vineyards. The river is setup for barge traffic, as most rivers
in Europe are. There are navigational buoys and aids everywhere.
I had to hurry back to pick up Dennis at 4:15 so we could get
to the Frankfurt airport for our flight to London.
I am attaching two pictures of a small village in the Oldenwald
called Beerfelden. This village is typical of the villages found
there. There was the remains of an old Schlob above the village,
but my picture of it didn’t come out well.
